7 Billion on Planet Earth! When Did That Happen?
To quote Andrew Cohen, author of Evolutionary Enlightenment: A New Path to Spiritual Awakening, “13.7 billion years of cosmic evolution has given rise to 3.8 billion years of biological evolution, which has given rise to tens of thousands of years of cultural evolution. We're on a moving train. We're all part of a process that's going somewhere. We don't have to believe in a metaphysical deity to feel the drive of an evolutionary impulse as a tangible energetic presence in our own experience at different levels.
At the lowest level, the sexual drive can be recognized as an evolutionary impulse. At a much higher level, the uniquely human compulsion towards innovation can be recognized as an evolutionary impulse. And finally, at the highest level, the spiritual impulse, which is a compulsion towards higher consciousness, can be recognized as an evolutionary impulse.
Something miraculous is going on here and it's trying to happen in and through all of us in every moment.” (all seven billion of us!)
The global population recently hit 7 billion give or take a few months. It took hundreds of thousands of years, until the early 1800’s, for the global population to hit 1 billion. It took another 120 years to reach 2 billion. Over the next 50 years, the global population doubled, reaching 4 billion around 1974 and 5 billion 13 years later. We hit 6 billion in 1998.
Between Oct 2011 and March 2012 it is predicted that we will have reached 7 billion people on the planet. Population grows when births exceed deaths. The 7-billion mark is attainable because people are living longer, the number of infant deaths have dropped, there is a more secure food supply and because of advances in sanitation and medicine.
Demographers at the United Nations Population Division set Oct. 31, 2011, as the "symbolic" date for hitting 7 billion, while acknowledging that it's impossible to know for sure the specific time or day. Using slightly different calculations, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the 7-billion threshold will not be reached until March 2012.
Imagine what the evolutionary impulse could do animating 7 billion people if they would only cooperate. What a thought! Until you return, fill your days with GIGGLES, JOY, and APPRECIATION!
