The Unconscious Instructor
In the spiritual community, we talk about conscious and unconscious. When people are oblivious of how their actions are impacting those around them, we call that being “unconscious”. When people are aware of how their actions are impacting those around them, we call that being “conscious”.
I recently checked out a fitness class for seniors at my gym. I showed up and so did 20 other students, so I was hopeful it would be a good class. Ten minutes into the class, I realized that the male instructor was “unconscious”. He was like a robot repeating steps and movements he had done a thousand times. No smile, no life, no enthusiasm, no energy. Twenty minutes into the class, he got everyone walking back and forth from one side of the room to the other and left without a word! What!!! Was he going out for a smoke??? Well, that did it for me. I grabbed my stuff and left the room too. He probably returned, but not me. That class just wasn’t a fit. I am more conscious than that!
Across the street from my gym is a dance studio. They offer NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) classes. “NIA is a 60 minute pleasure based fitness fusion of dance, yoga and martial arts.” Every class is different; one moves for 60 minutes without stopping — sometimes fast, other times slow. The music is rhythmic and fun to move to and all the instructors of the NIA classes are conscious. They smile, laugh, are full of life and enthusiasm. Everyone is enjoying the music and the movement while at the same time getting a good aerobic workout.
There are students in the fitness class at the gym that have been attending that class for years. They love it. It matches their level of consciousness and suits them until it doesn’t. When our consciousness evolves, we find ourselves attracted to new classes. It is natural to keep upgrading, changing our choices, moving on. In today’s world, change is occurring faster and faster. We change jobs, change partners, change eating patterns. Embrace change. It is natural to evolution.
Until you return, fill your days with GIGGLES, JOY, and APPRECIATION!

Isn't is ironic that those instructors who consciously strive to impart their lessons affect us both on a conscious and unconscious level. Due to their level of commitment, we focus deeply on what they present. And through that focus, we retain the information far beyond our consciousness. By being "in the moment" both instructor and pupil benefit long after that moment.
