From Expectations To Appreciation

We are on the cusp of a new year. Time for starting fresh, new resolve, clean slate. What changes will you be making in January to make life better for yourself? Are you considering external changes or internal ones? Would you benefit from an attitude shift? I am talking about your expectations. Can you identify yours? When you take an expectation and shift it into an appreciation, like magic, you find yourself living a more joyful life.

A life full of expectations is filled with anger, hurt, disappointments, resentments, complaints. When our expectations are not fulfilled, our feelings turn negative. A simple shift in attitude can turn our feelings from sadness to joy. Every morning your eyes open, you take a breath, you are alive. Are you appreciating or expecting?  Every morning you step out of bed with energy and movement. Do you appreciate that or expect it? Every time you open your mouth and sound comes out do you appreciate your voice or expect it? From the smallest thing to the grandest accomplishment you can expect or appreciate what is.

It’s a habit that quietly develops over many years of living. Take a moment to examine yours. If it is filled with expectation, then this is the year to shift the balance. Appreciate more often, expect not at all. See how it impacts your life.

Instead of expecting an outer remedy to make you feel better about your body, what if you appreciated the body you find yourself in as it is.

Instead of expecting your car to start, what if you took a moment to practice appreciating that you have a car, or motorcycle, or bike or two good legs that will take you wherever you want to go.

Instead of expecting your boss to appreciate you, what if you appreciated your boss, appreciated your job or if you are jobless, appreciated the extra time, the rest, the opportunity to take a walk in nature.

Appreciation inspires a positive response in everyone and everything. We do not do enough of it. Every body-cell sings when it is showered with appreciation. Consider the coming year an opportunity to transform your expectations into appreciations and see how that simple act can make a huge difference in the flow of your life.

It has been a pleasure serving you this year with the insights and uplifts that I post here. I appreciate your visits. I appreciate that you subscribe to this blog. For those who take the time to post a comment, I read each one and appreciate your contributions. I am called to continue to be a “beacon of light”, as your feedback suggests, but there is no way to know what adventures lie ahead.

All the best to you and yours in 2011. Until you return, fill your days with GIGGLES, JOY, and APPRECIATION!
