Books For People – A Recycling Service

Got books..... you want to donate?

Last week, I cleaned boxes and boxes of books off my shelves.  In the past, I would have to load all those boxes into my car, drive to a donation center and unload them myself.  No more!

Googling on the internet, I found this great service in southern California: Books For People.org.  It serves Los Angeles County providing a free donation pick-up service for books, DVD’s or CD’s. Books For People is the inspiration of one man who wanted to give back to his community, “We are a non-profit agency created to connect people needing an easy way to donate books with people needing books.”  The van comes to you, loads your boxes and leaves a donation receipt.  Wow, what a service!

Your donations benefit charities serving homeless children. Books they are unable to sell are re-donated to local libraries and other charities that need books for their programs or to sell in fundraisers. They also provide free donation pick-up services for their patrons who wish to donate large collections to a specific Friends of the Library branch. Plus, used books, CDs, and DVDs are kept out of landfills!

Comments off the web about this service:
“Great communication, friendly service, and they come right to your door! This is a really great way to contribute to a worthy cause. Fantastic organization!”

“Awesome service, much needed for LA.  They picked up about 1000 books from me when I moved last month.  Super friendly driver.  He even helped me box them up since I'm disabled and couldn't do it all myself.  It was all very easy and convenient!”

“This is the easiest way I know to see that books have a second life. I encourage EVERYONE to really look at their libraries and be honest with themselves. Why do you need all those books? Give them to someone to whom they will be a treasure!”

To schedule a pick-up, click, www.booksforpeople.org or call 877-877-4080.

When I offered to post their service on my blog, they told me they were a new service and appreciated the mention.  They will pick up one box of books or as many as their van will hold. And it’s FREE!

Books are heavy.  To lighten your load, call Books for People today. Until you return, fill your days with GIGGLES, JOY, and APPRECIATION!

Thanks a lot, Sylvia, now you tell me. After I spent weeks lugging bag after bag of books to the Pacific Palisades library, taking them downstairs and in my car and then walking them to the library from the parking lot. I probably had 50 bags - gave away 90% of my treasures and it seems even the 10% I have is still a lot. Was a lot of work. Thanks for sharing this - even if it does not serve me right now.
Hope you and George are well. Love, Helga

This is why sharing what we know is so helpful to others.  Sorry this blog post came too late to be of help to you, Helga, earlier this year when you were moving.  Hopefully it will be "just in time" for the next person who has a lot of books to dispose of.
