Doing the Nice - New Year Resolution
There is a radio program I listen to occasionally where the ending tag-line is “Now, go do the right thing” with the emphasis on “right”. Let’s step it up for 2010 and “do the nice thing”.
I woke from a dream this morning aghast at my behavior in it. My husband and I were in his car; he was driving. He expressed his desire to stop for ice cream on the way home. I knew at the last stop sign before the house if he turned left we would end up at the ice cream store; if he turned right, it would take us home.
My husband turned right not because he had changed his mind but because he was driving on automatic. Sylvia being nice would have reminded him of his intent. But in the dream, I kept silent until we were well on our way home and then sarcastically chirped, “Guess you changed your mind about the ice cream.” That is a perfect example of how ego causes trouble. The adolescent ego-mind loves to play games, be mean, pick a fight.
If there is a resolution to be made for 2010, I vote it be the year of going out of our way to be nice. A beautiful example is the heartwarming, true story of a cab driver and his female passenger. http://sylviasilk.com//2010/01/02/thecabride/print.aspx Sometimes just being nice can make an unforgettable impact.
To consciously practice being nice in every subtle way would make for a wonderful 2010 for us all. And that includes being nice to ourselves! Until you return, fill your days with GIGGLES, JOY, APPRECIATION and DOING THE NICE!
